not the state of hawaii, but the territory of hawaii. and when you start to read about dan inouye's life, his young life, you start to think this is just an ordinary, average guy. he's going to grow up, be pretty nondescript, who knows what he's going to do with the rest of his life. but when he's a youngster he does things like he parks cars at ballgames. he cuts his classmates' hair for money. these little things that we all do, he saved his money and he bought a -- and trained a flock of homing pigeons. he had a postage stamp collection. all this ordinary good old american stuff that boys do as they're growing up. but his life took a dramatic turn on december 7, 1941. he was an eyewitness, like senator akaka and senator akaka often tells the story, but dan inouye was an eyewitness to the bombing of pearl har pour. he was too young to join the military at that point but he wasn't too young to serve, and the way he served was he worked as a medicine nick the aftermath -- medic in the@math -- aftermath of that. he said he saw a lot of bl

i remember in our childhood in hawaii, hawaii is a diversified place. where i lived, there were many japanese families that live around us. there were many nights i spent sleeping in the homes of japanese families. eating their food, sleeping on the floor. i was really brought up with the japanese families. when the war broke out, i couldn't understand what was happening. there were families that were removed from the community and at that time,but they pursued iy wanted to serve this country as well. this is why in my time in congress, i did focus on trying to help the japanese americans in this country and asians in this country. and to help them achieve what they really aren't. i remember seeking the medal of honor for the unit and for those who fought in world war ii. i provided the pentagon with 100 names from these units. and was really surprised that there were finally 21 of them dealt a selected for the medal of honor senator inouye was one of them. but that showed they were willing to give their lives for this country, and they did. and since t
